Dave Shepel was a Colorado Springs country-radio programmer whose work as Music Director at KKCS spanned much of the 1990s.
Shepel is documented at KKCS by at least 1991. A contemporary country-music trade advertisement from that year quotes him in his role as Music Director, KKCS/Colorado Springs, placing him directly in the station’s music-programming operation during a period of major growth for contemporary country radio.
His role also connected KKCS with the national country-music industry. Coverage of the 1992 Country Radio Seminar in Nashville shows Shepel attending as KKCS Music Director alongside programmers and record-industry representatives from around the country.
The Broadcasting & Cable Yearbook for 1993 lists Shepel as KKCS Music Director under Program Director Charlie Cassidy. His tenure continued for years afterward: a January 1997 radio trade chart still identifies the KKCS programming team as PD Charlie Cassidy and MD Dave Shepel.
Shepel’s documented tenure provides an example of the behind-the-scenes music programming that shaped KKCS‘s country identity during the 1990s. Music directors evaluated new releases, worked with record labels and programmers, and helped determine which songs became part of the station’s daily sound.
Documented Southern Colorado role: KKCS Music Director.
