COLORADO RADIO PERSONALITY

Mel Rauh

Mel Rauh was a Colorado Springs broadcast engineer whose work helped keep KKCS and KIKX on the air during a period of shared operation and ownership change in the 1990s.

The Broadcasting & Cable Yearbook for 1993 identifies Rauh as Chief Engineer of KKCS AM, then licensed to Walton Stations of Colorado and operating from Centennial Boulevard. As chief engineer, Rauh was part of the technical staff responsible for the station’s transmission plant, studio systems and day-to-day broadcast reliability.

By 1994, Rauh’s responsibilities extended across the combined KIKX/KKCS operation. A Radio Business Report Colorado Springs market profile lists him as chief engineer for both KIKX-FM and the KKCS AM/FM combination while Wiskes/Abaris Communications operated the stations through a local marketing agreement. The stations shared the 5145 Centennial Boulevard facility under General Manager Bob Gourley, Program Director Charlie Cassidy and General Sales Manager Jerry Grant.

Rauh’s documented role illustrates an often less-visible part of local radio history. During periods of consolidation and shared operation, engineering staffs were responsible for integrating facilities and maintaining multiple transmitters and studios while ownership and programming arrangements changed around them.

Documented Southern Colorado roles: KKCS chief engineer; KIKX/KKCS chief engineer.
