Robert “Bobby Oz” Vargas was a Colorado Springs radio promotions professional whose work helped connect Clear Channel’s local stations with listeners through concerts, artist appearances and community events.
Vargas served as promotions director for Clear Channel’s Colorado Springs operation during the 2000s. Contemporary radio-industry coverage specifically documents him as promotion director of country station KCCY (Y96.9). In that role, Vargas was part of the team responsible for extending the station beyond the studio and transmitter—organizing the public appearances, artist events and listener promotions that were central to commercial radio’s local presence.
Radio & Records documented Vargas at several KCCY events. In November 2007 he appeared with the station staff during an acoustic happy hour featuring Capitol Nashville artist Eric Church at SoDo in Colorado Springs. A January 2008 issue again identified Vargas as KCCY’s promotion director during another acoustic event, this time with the band Whiskey Falls. Those contemporary trade photographs provide a useful record of the promotional side of Colorado Springs radio during the Clear Channel era.
Within the Colorado Radio Archive, Vargas is also remembered by the nickname “Bobby Oz.” His career represents an important part of radio history that was rarely heard directly over the air: the promotions staff responsible for turning a station’s programming and personalities into concerts, remotes, contests and face-to-face experiences with its audience.
