The Pueblo FM facility now known as KWRY began broadcasting October 30, 1979 at 107.1 FM as KAPI-FM, the sister station to KAPI 690 AM. It was created in part to extend the AM’s Spanish-language service into nighttime hours.
In 1981 the pair became KRMX AM and FM. KRMX-FM separated from the AM schedule in 1985, briefly using a mixed English-language presentation as “Super X FM 107,” then became country station KUSN under Sunbrook Broadcasting, owner of KCSJ.
The facility later used KCSJ-FM, KGRQ-FM and KNKN. KNKN, beginning in 1993, returned the station to Spanish-language programming for much of its tenure. It became KIQN in 2009 and KLCX after Educational Media Foundation acquired it in 2014. In February 2025, EMF realigned its Southern Colorado networks, changed the station’s calls to KWRY and moved Air1 onto 106.9. The realignment also put Air1 on a 103.1 FM translator serving Colorado Springs. KWRY continues to carry EMF’s Air1 network.
Paired / sister stations: KAPI/KRMX 690 AM in the early years; KCSJ during the KUSN era; and in the 1990s KCSJ and KYZX as part of a Pueblo group.
Call-sign lineage: KAPI-FM → KRMX-FM → KUSN → KCSJ-FM → KGRQ-FM → KNKN → KIQN → KLCX → KWRY.
