KFEL-AM

KFEL 970 AM signed on in Pueblo in September 1956, adding another full-service AM signal to a market that already included KCSJ, KDZA and KGHF.

The 1957 Broadcasting Yearbook listed KFEL as a 1,000-watt daytime station owned by KFEL Inc., with studios at 4411 Goodnight Avenue. Frank Donald Hall was listed as owner, John T. Roscoe as assistant manager/chief engineer and Earl B. Miller as sales representative.

The station later increased power and moved into religious programming. Today KFEL broadcasts a Catholic format through EWTN Radio and the Catholic Radio Network under Kansas City Catholic Network ownership.

KFEL begins broadcasting from Denver’s Albany Hotel

KFEL signed on in Denver in 1923, founded by Gene O’Fallon and broadcasting from the Albany Hotel. It became Denver’s second radio station and the beginning of the 950 AM lineage later identified with KIMN.

KFEL is operating on 950 AM as a Mutual affiliate

By 1953 KFEL was operating on 950 AM with 5,000 watts daytime from the Albany Hotel. The station was affiliated with the Mutual Broadcasting System and remained under Gene O’Fallon’s ownership.

1953 — In 1953 Smith joined KFEL-AM Radio in Denver.

September 1956

KFEL begins broadcasting in Pueblo

KFEL began broadcasting on 970 kHz, adding a fourth major AM voice to the postwar Pueblo dial.

Contemporary Radio Annual listings show KDZA 1230 at 1,000 watts daytime/250 watts nighttime under Pueblo Radio Co., with Dee B. Crouch simultaneously listed as president, general manager and chief engineer. KFEL 970 remained a 1,000-watt independent station at 4411 Goodnight Avenue under Joseph M. Clifton.
