William “Buddy” Johnson was a Pueblo radio and television entertainer, Western-music host and bandleader whose Colorado Rangers became a familiar part of Southern Colorado’s live music scene.
Johnson began his Pueblo radio work in the late 1940s at KGHF and KDZA, then joined KCSJ. His family’s historical archive documents his daily Western-music program, evening broadcasts with the Colorado Rangers and the live audiences who sent in requests. The Broadcast Pioneers of Colorado also records Johnson’s work on KCSJ television, including the Pueblo Barn Dance.
Johnson bridged local broadcasting and public performance: his programs brought regional music into homes and studio audiences, while the band played dances and community events. His television work included the children’s Adventurer’s Club and Western music programs.
Johnson died in Pueblo on December 5, 1986, aged 67.
