Hal Moore was one of the most enduring and successful personalities in Denver radio history. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he became closely associated with two of the city’s landmark stations: KIMN during its 1960s Top 40 heyday and KHOW during the long run of the Hal & Charley morning show.
Moore came to KIMN in 1964 after working in Des Moines. At a time when AM personalities were central figures in youth culture, he joined a station already famous for larger-than-life disc jockeys and promotional spectacle. As “Hal Baby” Moore, he became one of KIMN’s best-known voices and was repeatedly recognized in local listener polls. His years there placed him inside one of the most influential chapters of Colorado popular-music broadcasting.
In 1969, Moore moved to KHOW, where he also served as program director. He initially hosted afternoons while his longtime friend Charley Martin worked other shifts. In 1976 the two were paired in mornings as Hal & Charley. The combination became a Denver institution. At their peak, Moore recalled the program earning audience shares around 25 percent—an extraordinary level of market dominance. A KHOW broadcast by the pair can even be heard in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film The Shining during the drive toward the Overlook Hotel.
Moore remained a Denver broadcaster long after the original partnership ended, ultimately completing a radio career of roughly 61 years before retiring in 2019. His longevity linked the personality-driven AM era of KIMN with later generations of Denver radio, making him a rare firsthand participant in more than half a century of the city’s broadcasting history.
