COLORADO RADIO PERSONALITY

Robert E. Lee

Robert E. Lee was one of the prominent personalities of KIMN 950 during the station’s classic Top 40 era in Denver.

Lee joined a succession of distinctive KIMN disc jockeys recruited from around the country as the station fought to maintain its dominance with personality as well as music. Colorado Music Hall of Fame histories place him among the recognizable voices of the period alongside Roy “The Bell Boy” Gunderson, Royce Johnson, Boogie Bell, Bill “The Night Creature” Holley and Chuck Buell.

Radio-history recollections connect Lee with KTKT in Tucson before his move to KIMN in the early 1960s. In Denver he worked within a station culture built around memorable on-air identities, aggressive promotion, concerts and direct involvement with listeners. KIMN’s personalities were local celebrities, and management deliberately sought talent capable of making the spaces between records as compelling as the music itself.

Surviving Denver-radio archives preserve photographs and material from Lee’s KIMN tenure, including material dated October 17, 1968. Reliable public records are not sufficient to reconstruct his later life without risking confusion with others who shared his name, so this archive limits the biography to the documented broadcasting record.
