A pioneering voice in Colorado Springs broadcasting, Mike Garrett’s career reflects the evolution of local media during the golden era of mid-century radio and television.
Garrett began his broadcasting journey in 1959 at KYSN, hosting the 10:00 PM to midnight shift alongside notable local personalities Terry Wilson and Steve Scott. Enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1960, he maintained his connection to the airwaves while stationed on the East Coast, reporting for Portsmouth, New Hampshire stations WBBX and WHEB.
Upon returning to Colorado Springs in 1964, Garrett was appointed News Director at KRDO Radio by station manager Wes Bradley. His work soon expanded into television, where he produced feature reports, anchored weekend news broadcasts, and delivered local morning inserts for Good Morning America.
Garrett transitioned out of daily broadcasting in 1968 to pursue a career in real estate. Today, as one of KRDO’s earliest surviving news veterans, he continues a lifetime of public service through his ongoing work as an appraiser for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
