KYGO-AM

KYGO-AM was Denver’s classic-country service on 1600 AM in the mid-1990s, distinct from the country programming heard on 98.5 FM. Its defining documented moment came at midnight on November 30, 1996, when the standalone AM format ended and the signal began simulcasting KCKK-FM/104.3.

Denver Westword’s contemporary account described KYGO-AM as a classic-country station drawing on music from across five decades. It also documented the station’s local programming leadership: Chuck St. John had spent seven years at KYGO-AM, the last five as program director, before the format change. The report connected the decision to a crowded Denver country market and the challenges of programming music on AM.

This page documents the KYGO-AM identity and its 1600 AM service. It should be read alongside the separate KYGO-FM and earlier 950 AM records: the KYGO name and country programming moved among Denver signals, while each frequency had its own facility and chronology.

Documented identifiers

  • Call letters: KYGO-AM
  • Frequency: 1600 AM
  • Best-documented format: Classic country
  • Standalone format ended: Midnight, November 30, 1996; afterward the signal simulcast KCKK-FM/104.3.
  • Program director documented in 1996: Chuck St. John.

Research note: The contemporary report establishes the final day of the standalone KYGO-AM format and the subsequent simulcast. It does not, by itself, establish every earlier call-sign or frequency transition; those are kept with the related station-facility records.

Ownership, technical data and later facility identity

  • Owner during the KYGO-AM identity: Jefferson-Pilot, documented as the station owner in the 1996 Denver ratings directory.
  • KYGO-AM power: 5,000 watts on 1600 kHz AM.
  • Later owners of the 1600 AM facility: Jefferson-Pilot through 2006; Lincoln Financial Media, 2006–2014; Entercom, 2014–2015; Bonneville International, 2015–present. These dates describe the continuing frequency facility, not continued use of the KYGO-AM call letters.
  • Current station on 1600 AM: KEPN, branded ESPN Denver 1600, sports format, 5,000 watts. Its official website is Denver Sports: ESPN Denver 1600.

Studios and addresses

  • Former shared KYGO/KIMN studio: 1095 South Monaco Parkway, Denver, Colorado 80224. A local history records the 1984 move of KIMN and KYGO to Monaco Parkway; a 1993 trade directory and later FCC filing identify the address for the KYGO/Jefferson-Pilot operation.
  • Current KEPN studio: 7800 East Orchard Road, Greenwood Village, Colorado 80111, the published Bonneville Denver station address.

The KYGO-AM format ended in 1996. The current website, owner, power and address above identify KEPN, the present 1600 AM station, rather than a continuing KYGO service.
