COLORADO RADIO PERSONALITY

Bret Saunders

Bret Saunders is a Colorado radio personality, music interviewer and writer whose morning show on KBCO-FM became one of Denver’s longest-running and most recognizable music programs.

Early career and KTCL

Saunders grew up in Detroit and began working in radio while he was still in high school. He moved to Colorado in 1988, first working at a small station in Craig. In late 1993 he joined Fort Collins alternative station KTCL-FM for morning drive, where his quick humor and unusually broad knowledge of music developed a loyal following.

KBCO

Saunders moved to KBCO-FM in 1997 and anchored mornings there for more than 28 years. His recurring features included the “Much Too Early for a Question Question” and the mock-authoritative music-trivia character “The Sage of World Class Rock.” He interviewed major artists including Lou Reed and helped present and curate live performances recorded in KBCO’s Studio C.

Studio C compilations raised millions of dollars for organizations including Food Bank of the Rockies and the Boulder County AIDS Project. Saunders also wrote a long-running Sunday jazz column for The Denver Post and used his public role to support Colorado musicians and community causes.

His KBCO tenure ended in June 2026 amid a nationwide iHeartMedia restructuring. Saunders said at the time that he hoped to continue working and remain in Colorado. That same month, the Denver Gazette named him among its Colorado 150 cultural pathmakers.
