History

The 107.9 facility started as KJYE in 1988, became KIOB in 1989 and took the KBKL call letters in 1993. The Colorado Broadcasters Association credits Dick Maynard’s Jan-Di Broadcasting with creating KOOL 107.9 in 1996, alongside its country station KEKB. It’s now owned by Townsquare Media.

May 24, 1984

KEKB-FM signs on in Grand Junction

May 24, 1984 — Dick Maynard's new Jan-Di Broadcasting signed on country station KEKB 99.9, licensed to Fruita, in the middle of a Western Slope economic slump. KEKB went on to a record 48 share among adults 25–54. Jan-Di later created KBKL (KOOL 107.9) in 1996 and bought KMXY (Mix 104.3) in 1998.

1989

KJYE becomes KIOB

KJYE becomes KIOB: the 107.9 FM station in Grand Junction changed its call letters from KJYE to KIOB in 1989 (exact day not yet confirmed).

1993

Grand Junction’s 107.9 becomes KBKL

1993 — The 107.9 frequency in Grand Junction, which had been KJYE and then KIOB, took the call letters KBKL. It's known today as KOOL 107.9.
