KHNC (1360 AM) is a conservative talk station licensed to Johnstown, between Greeley and Loveland. If you listen to talk radio in northern Colorado, you may know it as “1360 KHNC: The Lion.”
History
The permit was first issued in the late 1980s as KZOI, and the station signed on as KHNC in January 1993, running talk from the start. In its early years it called itself the “USA Patriot Network” and carried programming from the political fringe. It made national news in 1996 when the Montana Freemen called in during their standoff with the FBI. After the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, it rebranded as the “American Freedom Network,” with some shows also carried on shortwave station WWCR.
On November 29, 1997, a fire started by a faulty hot plate destroyed the studio building. The transmitter was not damaged. The station was sold in 2019 for $250,000, and in 2020 the license moved to Excursion Broadcasting Network.
