KKCL-AM 1550

KKCL (1550 AM) in Golden has been through a handful of identities in a short time, including a cannabis-themed classic rock stunt. If you listen to adult alternative on 96.9 FM around Denver and Boulder, this is the AM signal behind it.

History

The station first signed on in 2011 as KGCQ on 1550 kHz and later carried the KDCO call sign (2012–2015) and sports programming (Mile High Sports) until June 1, 2015. That day it flipped to a cannabis-themed classic rock format as KBUD, then went silent on November 1, 2015.

KBUD was sold in a deal that closed February 17, 2016, for $125,000. The call sign became KKCL on January 13, 2016, and the station returned to the air as “The Cloud” on February 29, 2016, with a 96.9 FM translator. The license was transferred to Mainstreet Media of Colorado on May 23, 2016. A second 96.9 translator, K245CM in Golden, was added on November 11, 2016. In April 2016, Mainstreet debuted the adult alternative format 96.9 The Cloud.
