COLORADO RADIO PERSONALITY

Carl Akers

Carl Akers ran the newsrooms at KLZ radio and TV, and spent years making KLZ the place Denver went for the news. If you listened to or watched KLZ news in the 1950s and early 1960s, you were getting his product.

The Broadcast Pioneers of Colorado say he graduated from the University of Missouri in 1948 and moved to Denver to work for KLZ Radio in 1953, the year KLZ-TV, Channel 7, went on the air. He briefly became the 10 PM news anchor, decided after a week to go back to radio, and went on to “make Channel 7 the long running Number one News station in Denver.” He retired in 1966 to travel in Europe, then by 1967 started a second television career at KBTV, Channel 9, where his news and management skills helped Channel 9 become the number-one-rated newscast in 1975.

This is a short stub. Exact dates and titles at KLZ and KBTV aren’t on that page.
