David John “DJ” McCoy is a Colorado Springs native and veteran radio personality whose broadcasting career stretches back to the 1970s.
McCoy grew up in Colorado Springs and entered radio immediately after high school. By the late 1970s he had become a prominent personality and emcee, introducing major country stars and meeting artists including Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton in 1978.
A national 1980 radio directory documents DJ McCoy in morning drive, 6–10 a.m., on KIIQ AM/FM in the Colorado Springs/Manitou Springs market. KIIQ operated on 1490 AM and 102.7 FM and targeted adults 18–35. The same directory lists Danny Shanahan as PD/MD, Bobby Blackwell in middays and McCoy as the morning personality.
McCoy remained an important Colorado Springs radio voice into the 1980s. A later Colorado Springs Gazette profile notes that Colorado Gov. Roy Romer was a frequent guest on McCoy’s Colorado Springs morning show in the late 1980s. McCoy went on to work in major-market and national radio and voice work, with a career spanning roughly four decades.
