Herb Schubarth started as a radio engineer at KRDO in Colorado Springs and rose to vice president of engineering for Gannett Broadcasting.
Career
After teaching radar electronics in the Navy during World War II, Schubarth was discharged in 1949 and went to work as a radio engineer at KRDO, becoming its chief engineer. He helped design and install KRDO-TV in 1953, then served again in the Korean War. In 1961 he moved to KBTV Channel 9 in Denver, where he was chief engineer by 1967 and designed the station’s first remote broadcast truck.
He became corporate director of engineering for Mullins Broadcasting and Combined Communications, and by retirement was Gannett Broadcasting’s vice president of engineering, overseeing 16 TV and 13 radio stations. He served three years as an IEEE president, received the NAB Engineering Achievement Award in 1993 and was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Colorado Hall of Fame in 2010.
