COLORADO RADIO PERSONALITY

Tony Lamonica

Tony LaMonica was a Denver radio news and traffic broadcaster whose career culminated in one of the city’s most recognizable airborne-radio assignments.

LaMonica’s Denver broadcasting history predates his best-known traffic role. Historical archives document him in news at KTLK, part of a career that developed around reporting and live radio service.

In 1997, LaMonica was selected to succeed the retiring Don Martin as KHOW’s “Sky Spy.” Martin had pioneered airborne traffic reporting in Denver decades earlier, making the assignment one of the city’s best-known radio traditions. LaMonica carried that role into a much more congested era of Front Range commuting, providing straightforward aerial traffic reports for KHOW listeners.

His work was recognized by Westword, which named LaMonica Denver’s Best Radio Sky Spy in its 1998 Best of Denver awards. Contemporary coverage of the city’s airborne traffic reporters described his approach as direct and fact-focused in contrast with some of the more personality-driven competitors.
