David John McCoy, widely known on air as D.J. McCoy or DJ McCoy, is a Colorado-born radio broadcaster, voice talent and character actor. He grew up in Colorado Springs and said his first radio job came right after high school. Period trade records document a long career that moved from Vail and Colorado Springs to Durango, Phoenix, Denver and a small Maine market.
Colorado radio career
A March 1976 trade report recorded McCoy moving from KVMT in Vail to KIIQ in Colorado Springs as an air talent. A 1977 trade listing again identified him with KIIQ, in air talent and production. By 1980, the station directory listed DJ McCoy in KIIQ morning drive, 6–10 a.m.
In the 1980s, McCoy also worked at KVUU. A 2015 Colorado Springs Gazette profile recalled that former Colorado governor Roy Romer was a frequent guest on McCoy’s Colorado Springs morning show in the late 1980s. The Gazette confirms the show and period; the KVUU station credit is part of the archive’s contributed history.
A March 1984 Radio & Records want ad identified McCoy as vice president of programming at KIQX in Durango and listed him as the contact for a news director opening. The ad is a clear sign that his work included programming and staffing responsibilities, not only on-air hosting.
Later Colorado and national work
McCoy later worked in Phoenix, where he interviewed Reba McEntire in 1992, according to the Gazette. The article also recalled a favorite job in a small Maine market, where his mismatched-socks listener contest became a local signature. It does not identify the Phoenix or Maine stations.
In 2011, an industry report on Cumulus staffing changes listed McCoy in the morning news operation at KVOR in Colorado Springs and included him among the employees released in that round of cuts.
In 2014, McCoy joined Denver’s 93.7 The Rock for middays. The service was a translator simulcast of KCKK-AM, based in Littleton. A 2014 trade report named McCoy among the station’s on-air lineup; his subsequent aircheck is titled “93.7 The Rock – Denver 2015.” The Gazette reported that he left the radio role in April 2015.
Voice work and acting
McCoy established David John McCoy Voice Services Inc. and voiced work for Pandora, Cumulus Media and ABC stations. His 2015 Gazette profile described him as a sought-after radio personality and voice talent, and reported that he was preparing for a planned television pilot, Big Sky. The article described that project as planned; it does not establish that the pilot was produced. McCoy’s public professional profile lists voice talent, character acting, radio hosting and teaching among his work.
Where are they now?
As of October 2026, McCoy’s public professional profile identifies him with David John McCoy Voice Services Inc. and describes him as a voice talent, character actor, radio host and teacher. The profile lists Colorado Springs, Colorado.
