KFKA receives its first broadcast license in Greeley
On June 4, 1923, Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley received the first broadcast license for KFKA. The college's radio experimentation reached back years earlier, making KFKA one of the foundational stations in Colorado broadcasting.
Colorado State Teachers College sells KFKA
On April 11, 1930, Colorado State Teachers College sold KFKA to Mid-Western Radio Corporation after the educational institution found the cost of operating the station too burdensome. The transfer moved KFKA from educational to commercial operation.
KFKA moves to 1310 AM
In 1948, Greeley's KFKA moved to 1310 AM and gained unlimited operating hours. The frequency became the station's long-term home after several earlier reallocations.
KFKA goes silent after ownership bankruptcy
In the late 1980s, KFKA fell silent after Rainbow Broadcasting encountered financial trouble and bankruptcy. Colorado's pioneering Greeley radio voice remained off the air for roughly seven months before new ownership restored service.
Ingstad Group restores KFKA to the air
In 1987, the Ingstad Group restored KFKA 1310 to the air after approximately seven months of silence. The return preserved one of Colorado's oldest continuously identifiable radio institutions.
Local investors buy KFKA and launch all-talk format
In 1991, Joe Tennessen and a group of local investors operating as Weld Broadcasting Co. purchased KFKA, returning the station to local ownership. The station adopted an all-talk format.
KFKA joins Altitude Radio Network
On July 2, 2024, KFKA announced that it had joined the Altitude Radio Network. The arrangement added Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche game broadcasts to KFKA's Northern Colorado service, carried on 103.1 FM and 1310 AM and reaching Greeley, Fort Collins, Loveland and nearby communities. KFKA described the games as an addition to its existing local talk, Rockies and prep-sports programming.
