KHIG was the brief and highly unusual identity used by Colorado Springs’ 1580 AM facility in 2015. It replaced sports-formatted KREL and introduced a cannabis-centered talk service branded “K-High 1580.”
K-High 1580
The format began April 13, 2015, after Southern Colorado Radio leased airtime from station owner Pilgrim Communications. Contemporary coverage described KHIG as a pro-marijuana talk station and reported that its weekday schedule initially included three locally produced programs: Wake and Bake in mornings, High Noon at midday and High Drive in afternoon drive. Programming discussed medical and recreational cannabis along with related subjects such as alternative medicine and yoga.
A one-month terrestrial run
The experiment lasted only about a month on the AM signal. In May 2015, K-High’s talk programming moved online and KHIG temporarily began simulcasting easy-listening KFEZ 101.3. The short life of the format made KHIG one of the most distinctive call-sign chapters in Colorado Springs radio history.
The facility later passed through another ownership change and eventually became KFCS.
Facility lineage: KPIK → KWYD → KKKK → KREL → KHIG → KFCS.
