Dan Mitchell is a Denver-born radio personality and production director whose career spans more than four decades. He spent 36 consecutive years on the air in his hometown, becoming especially associated with KAZY, KMJI, KKHK/The Hawk, KXKL/KOOL 105 and KQMT/99.5 The Mountain.
Early life and first radio job
Mitchell traces his interest in music to the mid-1960s, when he listened to the jukebox at The Eight Ball, the Denver pool hall owned by his father. He decided in seventh grade that he wanted to become a disc jockey. After attending Metropolitan State University of Denver from 1977 to 1980, he landed his first on-air job at a small Denver AM station in the summer of 1980.
KAZY and KMJI
By the late 1980s, Mitchell was working at KAZY-FM as an on-air personality and production director. Contemporary industry reporting documents his move in April 1989 from KAZY to KMJI-FM, where he continued as production director. The transfer placed him inside another major Denver music operation during a period when FM formats and call letters were changing rapidly.
The Hawk and KOOL 105
Mitchell later became a morning personality on KKHK-FM/99.5 The Hawk. A 1997 Westword account identified him as the station’s morning host as The Hawk competed in Denver’s crowded adult-rock field.
He subsequently joined KXKL-FM/KOOL 105. By 2002 he was part of the KOOL 105 lineup, and in 2006 he described himself as the station’s afternoon-drive host while also being heard nationally on the Jones Radio classic-hits format. A 2007 CBS Radio realignment moved Mitchell from KOOL 105 mornings to middays. His work at the station also included the “Kool Colorado Christmas” charitable CD, for which he served as producer and talent organizer; his professional profile credits the project with a 1994 Colorado Broadcasters Association fundraiser award benefiting Family Tree.
99.5 The Mountain
Mitchell joined Entercom’s KQMT-FM/99.5 The Mountain by 2008 and became one of the classic-rock station’s signature afternoon voices. His programs mixed familiar records with music history and storytelling. Recurring and specialty features included The List with Dan Mitchell and Breakfast with the Beatles.
The Colorado Broadcasters Association repeatedly recognized Mitchell’s work. The List received major-market honors in the 2012 and 2015 competitions; his afternoon show received 2015 recognition; and Breakfast with the Beatles won the 2015 Award of Excellence for Best Regularly Scheduled Entertainment Program. He also shared recognition for The Mountain’s Epworth Foundation Request-A-Thon and a station promotion marking the 40th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run.
Mitchell’s final regular Denver broadcast aired July 15, 2016, before he relocated to Texas. Dan Hardee succeeded him in afternoon drive. In 2019, Mitchell returned to The Mountain’s Denver airwaves for a Saturday-morning edition of Breakfast with the Beatles.
Community work
Mitchell served as an annual television host for the Easter Seals telethon from 1992 through 1998. Beginning in 2014, he also hosted a radiothon supporting the Tennyson Center for Children. His award record reflects a recurring use of music programming and listener requests to raise money for Colorado families and nonprofit organizations.
Where is he now?
As of October 2026, Mitchell remains on the air through a multi-station classic-rock show. Current affiliate pages list him in weekday afternoons on Red 103.1 in Tennessee, 93.9 The Duck, and Rock 105.1 in McAlester, Oklahoma. His biography describes the program as music-centered, with the stories behind the songs, and notes that he now lives outside Colorado after his 2016 move to Texas.
