Caroline Llanes is a public radio reporter who, per the 2022 announcement, joined Aspen Public Radio (KAJX) in 2022 to cover the Roaring Fork Valley and the communities around it. If you’ve heard a news story about local government, public lands, wildfire crews or the valley’s trails on your drive down Highway 82, there’s a good chance it was hers. (We haven’t confirmed where she’s reporting today.)

From San Diego to the Roaring Fork Valley

Caroline is originally from San Diego. Aspen Public Radio says she visited the Roaring Fork Valley every year as a kid on family ski trips, so the move wasn’t a total surprise. She studied history at the University of Michigan, where she worked as a copy editor and columnist at The Michigan Daily, and she started in public media as a newsroom intern at Michigan Radio, covering topics like the pandemic and the Great Lakes.

Boston and WBUR

Before Colorado she was an associate producer for Morning Edition at WBUR in Boston, one of the bigger public radio newsrooms in the country.

Aspen Public Radio

Aspen Public Radio announced on February 14, 2022 that Caroline was joining as its general assignment reporter, a newly created position meant to add local reporting capacity. Her profile on Amplify Colorado describes her beat as local governments and public lands across Eagle, Garfield and Pitkin counties, with a focus that also takes in climate and environment, health, immigration, science and rural Colorado. She reports in English and Spanish, and her work has aired on NPR.

Her station work includes stories on the valley’s sheepdog championships, a bilingual public lands map aimed at bringing more of the Latino community onto local trails, an all-women’s wildland fire crew, and the 30th anniversary of the Storm King fire. The Colorado Broadcasters Association credits show up on the awards card on this page.
