Al Martischang was a Colorado radio owner whose holdings included Denver’s KNUS and a group of mountain-community stations during the 1990s.
In 1993, Martischang purchased KNUS in Denver from Paul Stebbins. Ron Crider, who had been working as the station’s manager and engineer, remained as general manager after the sale. Under Martischang, KNUS continued a talk-oriented service that included nationally syndicated programming as well as locally produced shows and specialty programs.
Martischang’s radio interests extended beyond Denver. Broadcasting-industry ownership records from the period identify him as president of a Colorado station group that included KHTH in Dillon and interests in KRKY Granby and KRKM Kremmling, giving his company a presence in mountain communities as well as the Denver market.
KNUS was subsequently sold to Salem Communications, becoming part of a larger group of Colorado religious and talk properties. Martischang’s ownership therefore represents a period immediately before another wave of consolidation reshaped the state’s radio industry.
