Charlie Cassidy was a Colorado Springs radio programmer and on-air personality whose long tenure at KKCS helped shape the station’s country sound from the late 1980s into the 1990s.
Cassidy arrived at KKCS in May 1987 after seven years in country radio. By November, Billboard selected him as its PD of the Week, identifying Cassidy as both the station’s Program Director and afternoon personality. The profile documented a deliberate effort to broaden KKCS without abandoning its core country audience. Cassidy reduced unfamiliar music, solicited listener feedback and increased the station’s visibility through local events and promotions. He told Billboard that KKCS‘s cumulative audience had doubled during his first four months at the station.
Cassidy remained an important part of the operation into the 1990s. The Broadcasting & Cable Yearbook for 1993 lists him as Program Director of KKCS AM/FM under General Manager Bob Gourley, with Dave Shepel serving as Music Director. The 1995 Country Radio Seminar directory again lists Cassidy as Program Director for KKCS-AM, KKCS-FM and KIKX-FM at the group’s Centennial Boulevard studios.
Trade reporting continued to identify Cassidy as KKCS Program Director in 1997, illustrating an unusually long period of programming continuity during an era when radio management and formats frequently changed.
Documented Southern Colorado roles: KKCS Program Director; KKCS afternoon personality; KIKX Program Director.
