COLORADO RADIO PERSONALITY

Don Hawkins

Don “The Hawk” Hawkins was a Denver rock-radio personality best remembered as half of the highly successful Steven B. & The Hawk morning team on KBPI. His career placed him at the center of Denver’s FM rock competition during the 1980s and early 1990s.

Hawkins was paired with Steven B. Williams on KBPI after Williams came to Denver in 1980. The team developed into one of the market’s prominent morning shows, combining personality-driven comedy with the music and attitude of album-rock radio. Historical accounts describe the pair as ruling Denver’s FM morning ratings for four years. Their humor relied heavily on parody and self-deprecation rather than the more confrontational style that would later become associated with “shock” radio.

Recurring material included entertainment-industry satire, mock commercials for fictional products and an ongoing soap-opera parody. The success of the program demonstrated how strongly personality could drive an FM rock station: listeners were tuning in for Hawkins and Williams as much as for the records.

Hawkins remained a recognizable Denver radio figure after the team’s peak years. He died unexpectedly in November 1994 at age 45 following routine surgery. His years with Steven B. Williams remain an important chapter in Denver rock-radio history and in KBPI’s development as one of the market’s defining FM brands.
