COLORADO RADIO PERSONALITY

Frank Wood Jr.

Frank Wood Jr. was a radio owner and entrepreneur whose Colorado holdings included KBPI and whose company helped create Alice, one of Denver’s most influential 1990s radio brands.

Wood came from the family behind Cincinnati rock station WEBN, a station known nationally for combining progressive rock with irreverent production and unusually creative promotion. He later acquired KBPI in Denver through Progressive Broadcasters Incorporated, which became Secret Communications.

In April 1994, Secret Communications executed a major Denver FM realignment. KBPI moved from 105.9 to the stronger 106.7 frequency formerly occupied by KAZY. The vacated 105.9 signal then launched a new station, Alice, under program director Gregg Cassidy. Wood, Cassidy and programming executive Chuck Finney developed the concept together, blending adult-oriented alternative music with distinctive personalities and production. Wood described the approach as “Warped AC.”

The Alice concept proved influential, and variations of the name and format subsequently appeared in other markets. Wood’s Colorado work reflected the same philosophy for which his family’s WEBN had become known: treating a radio station as a complete creative brand rather than simply a playlist.

Wood died in 2025. Remembrances from broadcasters who worked with him emphasized his willingness to prioritize creativity, humor and unconventional ideas, qualities evident in both WEBN and the Denver stations his company operated.
