KBKL is Grand Junction’s KOOL 107.9, a classic hits station. The 107.9 facility started as KJYE in 1988, became KIOB in 1989 and took the KBKL call letters in 1993. The Colorado Broadcasters Association credits Dick Maynard’s Jan-Di Broadcasting with creating KOOL 107.9 in 1996, alongside its country station KEKB. It’s now owned by Townsquare Media.

KEKB-FM signs on in Grand Junction

May 24, 1984 — Dick Maynard's new Jan-Di Broadcasting signed on country station KEKB 99.9, licensed to Fruita, in the middle of a Western Slope economic slump. KEKB went on to a record 48 share among adults 25–54. Jan-Di later created KBKL (KOOL 107.9) in 1996 and bought KMXY (Mix 104.3) in 1998.

1993 — The 107.9 frequency in Grand Junction, which had been KJYE and then KIOB, took the call letters KBKL. It's known today as KOOL 107.9.
