KBUT-FM

KBUT is a noncommercial community radio station licensed to Crested Butte, Colorado, broadcasting at 90.3 MHz. The station serves Gunnison County and the upper Gunnison Valley with local news, volunteer-produced music programs, and public-radio programming. KBUT is operated by Crested Butte Mountain Educational Radio, Inc.

History

KBUT grew out of Earth Station Radio, a low-power community station in Crested Butte. Organizers began pursuing a full-power license in 1983. KBUT-FM signed on December 20, 1986, from a building known locally as the bus barn. Its first song was Van Morrison’s “Wavelength.” The station has since developed into a volunteer-powered community and NPR member station.

Programming and service

KBUT’s schedule includes local and national news, weather, arts and culture, public affairs, and volunteer-hosted music spanning genres such as classical, jazz, rock, and hip-hop. The station operates a regional signal network that includes KGNI-FM 88.7 in Gunnison and translator K235AK 94.9 in Almont.
