KCME 88.7 FM is an independent, listener-supported public radio station based in Colorado Springs. Its primary service is classical music and cultural programming, presented around the clock for listeners across the Pikes Peak region and a wider network of mountain and plains communities.
Origins in Manitou Springs
Cheyenne Mountain Public Broadcast House was organized as a Colorado nonprofit in 1977. KCME began broadcasting in 1979 from a small house near a creek in Manitou Springs, initially operating at 88.1 FM. The station later moved to 88.7 FM and relocated its studios and offices to Colorado Springs in March 1993.
Regional expansion
KCME’s main signal originates from a transmitter on Cheyenne Mountain. Over time, the organization expanded its reach through additional transmitters and translators serving Manitou Springs, Nathrop, Salida, Buena Vista, Cañon City, Florence, Penrose, Breckenridge and Summit County. Streaming and the station’s mobile app extended that service beyond the terrestrial coverage area.
Classical and jazz services
Classical KCME identifies its mission as strengthening Colorado’s cultural community through music, arts programming, digital platforms and community engagement. The organization also operates Jazz 93.5, a sister service devoted to jazz. Both services are supported through listener contributions, grants and program sponsorships rather than commercial spot advertising.
KCME’s Colorado Springs studios are located at 1921 North Weber Street.
