KKFN-FM

KKFN (104.3 FM), branded Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan, is a commercial sports radio station serving the Denver–Boulder area. It is licensed to Longmont and owned and operated by Bonneville International. The station transmits from Green Mountain in Lakewood and operates from Greenwood Village. Its present call sign reflects the “Fan” sports-radio identity, but the 104.3 MHz frequency has served several distinct formats and brands since it signed on in 1964.

History

KLMO-FM and the north-metro signal (1964–1986). KLMO-FM began broadcasting in September 1964 as a sister station to KLMO (now KRCN). Initially operating with 28,000 watts and a short antenna, it primarily served Longmont, Boulder, and northern Denver suburbs. It simulcast middle-of-the-road music and news from its AM sister. The station was owned by Radio Longmont, Inc.

KQKS and KS104 (1986–1997). Western Cities Broadcasting acquired the station in December 1986 and increased its authorized power, extending its reach toward Denver. It adopted the KQKS call letters and an adult-contemporary format as “104.3 Kiss FM”; the branding shifted to “KS104” in 1987, and the station later emphasized rhythmic contemporary music. Western Cities sold KQKS to Jefferson-Pilot Communications in 1996. In January 1997, Jefferson-Pilot moved the KQKS call sign and format to 107.5 FM.

Country and smooth jazz (1997–2008). On January 18, 1997, the 104.3 frequency became KCKK with a country format, first as “Country 104.3” and later “K104.3.” The country programming moved to AM 1600 in September 2000; 104.3 then adopted smooth jazz as KJCD, branded “CD104.3.” Jefferson-Pilot’s Denver stations began operating from new Lakewood studios in 1997. Following the 2006 merger of Jefferson-Pilot and Lincoln National, the broadcasting division was renamed Lincoln Financial Media, which moved its Denver operations to Greenwood Village.

The Fan on FM (2008–present). Denver’s all-sports “The Fan” service began on AM 950 on March 6, 1995, promoted as the market’s first 24-hour sports station. On March 8, 2008, KJCD changed to sports and began simulcasting the AM station as “104.3 The Fan”; its call sign became KKFN-FM four days later. The sports format moved fully to FM in March 2009, when the station adopted the call sign KKFN. The transition carried the established AM sports operation onto the wider-reaching FM signal. Its early personalities included coach Doug Moe and Tom Green, followed by Denver sports voices including Irv Brown, Joe Williams, and Sandy Clough. In January 2023, Bonneville expanded the “Denver Sports” identity across its Denver sports properties while retaining “The Fan” brand on 104.3.

Bonneville acquired the Denver stations from Lincoln Financial Media in July 2015 as part of an asset exchange involving Entercom and Bonneville. The station remains part of Bonneville’s Denver cluster.
