KKQX was the first call sign assigned to Colorado Springs’ 106.3 MHz FM station. It signed on in 1987 with a soft adult contemporary format and changed its call letters to KKLI in 1988. KKQX is an earlier call-sign era of the station now known as KKLI.
History
The new 106.3 MHz station began broadcasting in 1987. Contemporary trade coverage and later station histories describe its initial sound as soft adult contemporary. In 1988, the station adopted KKLI after that call sign became available from a Portland station. The KKLI call letters and subsequent “K-Lite” identity became the station’s better-known branding in the Colorado Springs market.

FCC revives Fountain 106.3 FM allotment
The path to Fountain's first local FM nearly ended before a station was built. The FCC had terminated a proceeding to assign Channel 292A (106.3 MHz) after original petitioner Kurt M. Grow failed to demonstrate initial and continuing interest. Newly formed Fountain Broadcasting Company petitioned for reconsideration. The FCC reversed its earlier action and made the 106.3 allotment effective February 1, 1982. The facility eventually signed on as KKQX in 1987 and became KKLI in 1988.
