KRQY-FM

KRQY was the call sign of the 98.9 FM station serving Colorado Springs from 1981 to 1983. It preceded the long-running “Magic” identity now associated with KKMG.

History

The station adopted KRQY in 1981, following the KPLV period. In 1983 it changed its call letters to KKMG and moved to a Top 40/CHR presentation as “Magic 99,” despite operating at 98.9 MHz. The name was later adjusted to reflect the actual frequency. The station’s history is part of the broader Colorado Springs–Pueblo radio market, where it competed with other contemporary music outlets.
