  • KDUR-FM

    KDUR (91.9 FM) is Fort Lewis College’s student and community radio station in Durango. If you’ve ever tuned in for a free-form mix of music, local shows, news and public-affairs programs in the Four Corners, that’s KDUR, and it also has a second signal at 93.9 FM in the Durango area.

    How it grew

    KDUR started as a Fort Lewis College radio-club effort and began as a low-power campus station, described in historical accounts as a 10-watt student operation. In 1976 it went to 150 watts, which pushed reception beyond campus. The station marked its fiftieth anniversary in 2024. On May 11, 2010, the FCC licensed a power boost for the 91.9 facility to 6,000 watts.

    KRAI (550 AM) is “55 Country,” the country station in Craig, Colorado. If you live in northwest Colorado and wake up to country music, this is a hometown signal that’s been on the air since the late 1940s.

    The story

    If you live around Craig, KRAI has been part of the landscape since it began broadcasting in 1948. A key change came in 1955, when it got the okay to relocate to 550 kHz, running 1,000 watts during the day and 500 at night. Daytime power went up again in 1968, to 5,000 watts. KRAI-FM is its sister station, and the AM has held onto a local country identity around Craig. Blizzard Broadcasting, LLC operates it.
