Charles “Chuck” Denney Jr. was a Southern Colorado radio owner and executive whose work centered on La Junta during the era of independently owned local AM and FM broadcasting.
By the mid-1970s, national broadcasting trade publications identified Denney as co-owner and general manager of KBZZ in La Junta. A 1975Broadcasting employment notice described the operation as an established AM station with a new FM service, sports-oriented programming and strong community acceptance. Denney’s role encompassed both ownership and the daily management of the local broadcasting business.
His standing within small-market radio extended beyond La Junta. By 1980, Denney was participating in national industry discussions; the National Association of Broadcasters listed him as a panelist for a workshop on controlling station operating costs, identifying him with KBZZ in La Junta.
Family records also document that Denney and his wife, Lois, co-owned a La Junta radio station while raising their family in southeastern Colorado. Their work reflects an era when locally owned stations were often deeply integrated into the civic and commercial life of the communities they served.
