COLORADO RADIO PERSONALITY

Francisco “Paco” Sanchez

Francisco Valadez “Paco” Sanchez was a pioneering Denver broadcaster, entertainer and community leader. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1915, he came to Denver in 1948 and recognized that the city’s growing Latino community had virtually no Spanish-language radio service.

By 1949 Sanchez was buying airtime on Denver stations KTLN and KMYR for his own Spanish-language programming. In 1954 he acquired his own station, KFSC, broadcasting initially from his home on Lafayette Street. The station became Denver’s first Latino-owned radio station and an important outlet for Spanish-language music, information and community life.

Sanchez later moved KFSC to facilities at 2185 Broadway. Beyond broadcasting, he founded organizations intended to expand economic and civic opportunities for Denver’s Latino community.
