KTLN-AM

KTLN is an early call-sign in the history of Denver’s 1280 AM facility. The station signed on May 16, 1948, at 990 kHz with 1,000 watts daytime, under the ownership of former Kansas governor and 1936 presidential candidate Alfred M. Landon. It moved to 1150 kHz in 1951 and to 1280 kHz in 1954. Landon announced the sale of his broadcasting interest in 1949. Broadcast Pioneers of Colorado also records an earlier 1180 kHz reference in its account of the frequency changes.

In 1969, KTLN became KTLK. The station then competed in Denver’s Top 40 market, including against KIMN. The call letters and format later changed again; those later identities belong to separate station-era records in this archive.

KTLN’s place in Denver sports broadcasting is unusually well documented. The Denver Broncos’ team historian records that the club’s broadcasts aired on KTLN 1280 from 1964 through 1969, introducing Bob Martin to the radio booth. Martin also began Denver’s first full-time sports-talk program on KTLN in 1965.
