COLORADO RADIO PERSONALITY

Gwen Rhea

Gwen Rhea was a Colorado Springs radio news professional who served as News Director of KKCS AM/FM in the early 1990s.

The Broadcasting & Cable Yearbook for 1993 identifies Rhea as KKCS‘s News Director during the station’s traditional-country era. At the time, the Walton Stations operation included KKCS 1460 AM and 101.9 FM, with Bob Gourley as General Manager, Charlie Cassidy as Program Director, Dave Shepel as Music Director and Mel Rauh as Chief Engineer.

Rhea’s position represents an important part of full-service local radio that can be easy to overlook in later histories centered on music and personalities. News directors were responsible for the local-information component of a station’s service, including newscasts and coverage of events affecting the community.

Documented Southern Colorado role: KKCS AM/FM News Director.
