COLORADO RADIO PERSONALITY

Jay Mack

Jay Mack, born James MacIsaac, was one of the signature personalities of Denver’s KIMN during the station’s celebrated 1960s Top 40 era. Joining KIMN in 1963, Mack developed an on-air style that blended record presentation with character comedy, making his program distinctive even among a staff famous for colorful personalities.

Mack’s best-remembered creations were recurring fictional characters including Betty Jo Bioloski, Niles Lischness and Farley McKluth. He prerecorded lines for the characters and wove them into his broadcasts, creating comic exchanges that gave the impression of an ensemble cast. The approach helped make Mack one of KIMN‘s recognizable “Boss Jocks” as the station became a central part of Denver youth culture.

His Denver career extended well beyond his first KIMN run. Contemporary career records place Mack at KIMN beginning in 1963, followed by KBTR, a return to KIMN, later work at KTLK and KDEN, and another long Denver chapter atKXKL beginning around 1990. He also worked outside Colorado at stations including KOL in Seattle, WFUN in Miami, KNAK in Salt Lake City and WDAF in Kansas City.

Mack remained sufficiently identified with KIMN to return for the station’s major 30th-anniversary celebration in May 1984, when former personalities gathered in Denver to commemorate the station’s history. He died on March 2, 2002, at age 64.
