KDEN-AM / 1340 lineage

The 1340 AM facility traces to KMYR, launched by F. W. Meyer in the early 1940s. In 1956 the station was sold and became KDEN. The 1960 Broadcasting Yearbook lists KDEN at 1601 West Jewell Avenue with Ed Koepke as president/station manager and Gene Amole as vice president/general manager; Lloyd Knight handled news and programming.

KDEN and its later FM sister mixed popular music, jazz and classical programming. In later decades KDEN also operated an all-news format, first using NBC’s News and Information Service and then continuing with local news after the network service ended.

KDEN went silent in early 1993 and returned that December as KKYD/Radio AAHS. Colorado Public Radio acquired 1340 in 2000 and moved KCFR news programming to the AM in 2001. The frequency later became KVOQ and KDCO.

Lineage: KMYR → KDEN → KKYD → KCFR → KVOQ → KDCO.

KMYR moves from 1340 to 710 AM

In April 1956, KMYR moved from its original 1340 kHz frequency to 710 kHz. The frequency move split what later became two distinct Denver station lineages: the former KMYR operation continued on 710, while 1340 became home to KDEN.
