Royce Johnson was one of the early personalities of KIMN 950 during the years when the station was becoming Denver’s dominant rock-and-roll outlet.
Johnson was part of the generation of KIMN disc jockeys who preceded and overlapped with the station’s best-known promotional era. Historical accounts place him at KIMN by 1958, alongside personalities such as Pogo Poge, Roy “The Bell Boy” Gunderson and Boogie Bell. He was sometimes billed as “Royal” Royce Johnson.
KIMN’s success depended heavily on those personalities. Its announcers were recruited for distinctive voices and identities, appeared at public events and participated in promotions that made the station part of Denver youth culture. The Colorado Music Hall of Fame includes Johnson among the successive generations of voices that built the station’s reputation.
Career records indicate that Johnson later worked at KTLN in Denver and subsequently moved to Southern California, including KDEO and KOGO in San Diego. Radio-history records report that he died in the mid-1970s.
