Skip Weller was a Denver radio executive who managed a major five-station group during the rapid consolidation of the market in the mid-1990s.
Weller became general manager of Chancellor Broadcasting’s Denver properties during a period when ownership transactions were dramatically reshaping the local dial. By 1996, Chancellor controlled KXKL-FM and its AM companion, classical KVOD-FM, KIMN-FM and KALC-FM “Alice,” giving Weller responsibility for a cluster spanning oldies, classical, 1970s music and Hot AC.
The group’s construction required a complicated series of acquisitions and frequency changes. Tribune traded for KVOD’s 99.5 frequency and used it to launch KKHK “The Hawk,” while Chancellor kept the classical KVOD service alive by moving it to 92.5. Chancellor then acquired KIMN and KALC from Secret Communications, creating one of Denver’s early large-scale station clusters.
Contemporary reporting quoted Weller describing the acquisitions as evidence of the company’s confidence in Denver as a growing media and economic market. His management tenure therefore sits squarely within the industry transition from individually operated stations toward consolidated multi-station clusters.
