The 1190 AM facility became closely tied to Boulder’s KBCO story during the Bob and Diane Greenlee era. It operated alongside KBCO-FM and eventually carried the KBCO-AM calls.
After Jacor acquired Noble Broadcast Group, Jacor donated the 1190 license, transmitter site and related equipment to the University of Colorado Foundation on December 30, 1997. CU’s student-radio organization spent 1998 preparing the facility for a new service, Radio 1190.
The former commercial KBCO-AM signal thus became a student-programmed noncommercial outlet, preserving the frequency while giving CU students a full-power broadcast platform.
