KFML 1390 was a Denver AM/FM operation whose FM sister on 98.5 became today’s KYGO. A surviving February 1957 station verification letter lists both KFML 1390 AM and 98.5 FM at 262 Fillmore Street in Denver.
KFML became especially important during Denver’s late-1960s and early-1970s freeform era. The station mixed adventurous album music with news, interviews and live performances, and its studios hosted both established and emerging musicians. The FM was sold to Jefferson-Pilot and ultimately became KIMN-FM and KYGO; the freeform approach continued for a time on 1390 AM.
The 1390 facility later cycled through KJJZ, KPPL, KMDK, KFTO, KDZR and KJME before becoming part of KGNU Community Radio.
Lineage: KFML → KJJZ → KPPL → KMDK → KFTO → KDZR → KJME → KGNU.
