KXRE-AM

The 1490 AM facility signed on in Manitou Springs in November 1956 as KCMS, the AM simulcast partner of KCMS-FM 102.7. The AM became KEDI in 1970, KIIQ in 1974, KRTS in 1982, KIIQ again in 1983, KIKX in 1984 and KRYN in 1987 before later taking the KXRE identity.

The 1490 AM station is currently operated by Pikes Peak State College as a faculty-run, student-operated outlet. The college describes its eXtra Music service as “student-powered maximum variety,” with music from 1980s flashbacks, 1990s retro rewinds, 2000s throwbacks and current alternative. The service is also available on 102.1 FM, 89.1 FM and online.

Paired / sister stations: 1490 was historically paired with 102.7 through the KCMS, KIIQ and KIKX eras, including periods of simulcasting.
