KOA is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Denver, Colorado, broadcasting on 850 kHz. It carries news, talk and sports programming under the KOA NewsRadio identity. The station broadcasts at 50,000 watts, the maximum power for a U.S. AM station, and is owned by iHeartMedia. Its current website is koanews.iheart.com.
History
KOA began broadcasting on December 15, 1924, as a General Electric station on 930 kHz. It moved among frequencies in the 1920s and increased its power from 5,000 watts at sign-on to 12,500 watts in 1927. NBC began operating the station in 1929 and acquired it in 1941. KOA raised its power to 50,000 watts in 1934 and moved to 850 kHz in 1941. Its high-power signal became a major regional service across the Mountain West.
NBC sold KOA in 1953 to Metropolitan Television Company, whose principal stockholder was Bob Hope. General Electric repurchased the station in 1968 and sold it to A. H. Belo Corporation in 1983. Jacor Communications acquired KOA in 1987; Clear Channel Communications acquired Jacor in 1999. Clear Channel adopted the iHeartMedia name in 2014.

Moments in KOA-AM History
KOA begins broadcasting in Denver
General Electric’s KOA signed on December 15, 1924 from its purpose-built facility at 14th Avenue and Krameria Street. The opening program mixed music, civic addresses and an invocation and established KOA as GE’s Rocky Mountain broadcasting station.
1960: Jesse Slusser retires from KOA-AM
1960 — Slusser retired from KOA-AM in 1960 after 36 years.
KOA and KOAQ move to 1380 Lawrence Street
In June 1984, KOA and KOAQ moved their radio studios and offices to 1380 Lawrence Street in Denver, separating the radio operations from their former television sister at the Lincoln Street facility.
Jacor buys KOA and KOAQ
In 1987, Jacor Communications purchased Denver stations KOA and KOAQ for a reported $24 million. Two years later, KOAQ would become classic-rock KRFX/The Fox.
Jacor acquires KAZY-FM 106.7
In 1993, Jacor Communications acquired Denver rock station KAZY-FM 106.7 for $5.5 million, adding the station to a Denver operation that already included KOA and KRFX.
1996: April Zesbaugh joins KOA-AM
1996 — She joined KOA-AM in 1996 and became known for her long-running partnership with Steffan Tubbs, interviews with newsmakers and steady presence during breaking news.
Seven Denver stations consolidate into a new Tech Center complex
Jacor began planning a consolidated Denver Tech Center facility in October 1998 for KOA, KHOW, KTLK, KHIH, KRFX, KBPI and KTCL. The old studio lease expired in September 1999, creating a firm construction deadline. During the project, Clear Channel acquired Jacor.
2013: Mandy Connell joins KOA-AM
2013 — Connell joined KOA-AM in Denver in 2013.
2016: Kathy Lee joins KOA-AM
2016 — In 2016 Lee joined Lewis and longtime Broncos broadcaster Dave Logan on KOA-AM ’s Lewis & Logan .
